??? Most of the trees where on there last leg if they didn't remove them now the next big storm would have. Plus they are planting new trees in there place. I am just glad the bad tree in front of my house was removed before the do-gooders messed things up....

Gee, wow. now I remember why Mr Mhorses stopped visiting the Elknet boards....

I deduced it from there ;)

ouch, I must've hit a nerve....I wasn't making an "issue". We've only lived in Walworth County going on our 7th year and the tree-lined Hometown appeal Elkhorn has (or had)was what attracted us to this area- we were disappointed to see what had become of it in recent months, but happy to see improvements being made.

It's a shame the trees are looked upon as a PIA for some people who live along the main drag, but yeah, we like trees. Milwaukee is "going green", buy NOT removing healthy trees to make way for road repairs and every effort is made to protect them and their environment while making our beautiful towns and cities a place where we can be proud to live.

We thought those trees were beautiful, especially in Fall. You would love it out where we live, we're surrounded by trees and like it that way :)

There is more than 1 main drag in Elkhorn.

I like trees personally I would rather live in the country surrounded by them which is why I want to sell my house and move. My issue is, I have lived in this house 5 - 6 years about and I have know about this plan to redo the road and take out all these trees for this many years. I would even say I am fairly uninformed as to what is going on in this town and I still knew about it. So it drives me crazy when all this time goes by for all the tree huggers and do-gooders to make a case for letting the trees be. Than 2 months into the project a group of people lead by Julie Taylor an Alder Woman I believe and on the board that is over seeing this project and the projects in previous years. Finally gets a bug up her you know what about the tree issue, I wanna know why. They have had all these years to work something out to be a happy medium for everyone. Yea sure I will give you the fact that not all the trees are probably coming to the end of there life cycle and need to come down but most are close. Its better to do it now than later. Now they have created a situation in my opinion, that could have unintended consequences. What if in 5 or 10 years or so that tree comes down or part of it comes down and kills or seriously injures someone. Also the plan I saw they were putting in more trees than they were taking out. So again why this issue even?

Hi~

I don't think I was making an issue. I was asking about how things were going, because to us, it appeared to be rather drastic, when we began to see the construction take off, and wondered why they all needed to come down? I just don't agree with the decision to take them all down with the hypothetical belief that one may or may not fall in 5-10 yrs. Take out the diseased or afflicted tree and replace it-

Even though we may not live right in town, or be directly involved, we do care about what goes on. We're proud of this little town, and would hate to see big change take away that "Mayberry Charm" that drew us here, unless it's for the better of the whole community.

re: tree-huggers and do-gooders. Someone has to do it. There has to be control, responsibility and accountability for our natural resources. Look at the Sequoia National Forest. How many of those can we spare?

If we can agree on one thing, I am happy they are putting new trees in and looking forward to having the main thoroughfare back to normal again-we drive through town every day and can only imagine the aggravation for people who have had to live with it all winter...

i think its aweful to how they cut down healthy trees, just so they have room to work on something..i went threw elkhorn after most of the trees were removed but before i knew what they were doing and i thought ???? what the hell?? it seems more bare here, then i started looking for stumps to see if they cut down trees or something..i dont go down that way to often, so i am not sure just how many trees were destroyed, but all i know it, it looks PLAN and bare..so sad..just like what they did to hwy 50 near geneva national..

I live in Clinton and when the village decided to redo the main drag here they had to cut down several large trees. They later offered smaller trees as replacements. The smaller trees will only get to be about 10 to 15 feet tall and won't interfere with power lines and also won't become nusance trees that have huge limbs fall off in storms.
Also recently I was informed that a tree on a rental property I owned had Dutch elm disease and the village offered me 90% of the cost to remove it if I had it removed before spring. So, I had that tree taken down and the stump removed right away before it caused other elms destruction by passing the disease on.
I don't think I am a "tree hugger" but I am concerned with how my Town looks as you drive through it. Our town is known for the trees that are in the terraces of almost everyones front yard, They used to be Elm trees but now we are getting away from that and getting into more dwarf type decerative trees.
