PostSubject: Classic beef stew   Wed 31 Jan 2007, 14:32

1 package of beef stew meat
1 cup flour
2 tbs vegetable oil
3-4 packets beef gravy mix
4-5 potatoes
1-2 cans corn (or 1 pkg frozen corn)
1 can peas (or 1 pkg frozen peas)
1-2 carrots

I usually cut up the beef into smaller chunks than what is normally packaged, say 1" squares or so. Put beef cubes into a ziploc bag with the flour and shake until coated.

Heat the oil in a deep pan like a dutch oven. Put flour coated beef into the pan and just brown the outside of the pieces of meat. Add about four cups of water and simmer for 45-60 minutes.

Peel the potatoes and cube, then add to the meat/water mixture. Add two of the gravy packets and one cup water. Increase the heat to just below a boil and cook for 30 minutes.

Add other veggies and cook for 15-30 minutes, until potatoes are done.

The stew actually gets better after it sits overnight in the fridge, then reheated.
